Tide Draft Recap
I took a look a the Tide’s 2012 first round draftees here.
Now, a look at the rest of the gang:
35. Courtney Upshaw, Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens love some nasty defense and Upshaw is a nasty player who looks like a good fit to replace former Tider Jarret Johnson.
136. Josh Chapman, Indianapolis Colts. The Colts drafted light on this year and Chapman could be a good pickup for nose tackle in their 3-4.
146. De’quan Menzie, Kansas City Chiefs. Menzie is added to a secondary that includes Eric Berry and former Tide star Javier Arenas.
247. Brad Smelley, Cleveland Browns. As a seventh round pick, Smelley’s probably a long shot to make the team, but hey, at least he can say he was drafted.
The free agent signings so far include:
Alfred McCullough, Baltimore Ravens
Jerrell Harris, Atlanta Falcons
Marquis Maze, Pittsburgh Steelers
William Vlachos, Tennessee Titans
Alex Watkins, Tennessee Titans
Phelon Jones, Jacksonville Jaguars
Darius Hanks, Washington Redskins
All-in-all to have eight players drafted and at least seven sign free agent contracts isn’t bad. The Tide’s draft total was obviously top heavy due to four players going in the first round, but I’m not totally surprised that the free agents wound up as free agents. In fact, the only real surprise – other than Upshaw falling out of the first round – is that Smelley was drafted.
