Week 3 Review

Kind of a mediocre week with a 9-3 record.  For the year we’re on a 29-6…

LSU 63, Idaho 14 [Prediction: LSU 56, Idaho 0]

  • Pre-game: “The Vandals are a very bad football team (0-2) and the Tigers are very good.  You do the math.”
  • Post-game: I almost wrote the pre-season is over for LSU, but then I remembered they play Auburn next week.

Mississippi State 30, Troy 24 [Prediction: Mississippi State 27, Troy 14]

  • Pre-game: “This is one of four SEC vs. Sun Belt match-ups this week and the only one involving the SEC school going on the road.  The Bulldogs should have a hangover after beating Auburn.  Hopefully, it won’t be bad enough to spoil the Dogs’ fun.”
  • Post-game: The party continues for the Dogs with a win over the Trojans.

Texas A&M 48, SMU 3, [Prediction: Texas A&M 42, SMU 30]

  • Pre-game: “Will the Aggies have a hangover from their moral victory over Florida?  The Mustangs were blasted by Baylor in their opener and then blasted S.F. Austin.  This one should be somewhere in the middle.”
  • Post-game:  Seemed like old times for Kevin Sumlin with his team beating up on the Mustangs.

Georgia 56, Florida Atlantic 20 [Prediction: Georgia 49, Florida Atlantic 10]

  • Pre-game: “The Owls have a heckuva two-week stretch: Saturday at Athens and the following Saturday against Bama.  Neither trip should work out well.”
  • Post-game: Next up for the Dawgs, Vandy.

Vanderbilt 58, Presbyterian 0 [Prediction: Vanderbilt 45, Presbyterian 0]

  • Pre-game: “Know what the nickname is Presbyterian, a private school located in Clinton, S.C.?  The Blue Hose.  I kid you not.  Well, this Saturday, the Presbyterian Blue Hose will get flushed by Vandy, a private school located in Nashville, Tenn.”
  • Post-game: The Blue Hose fall hard.

South Carolina 49, UAB 9 [Prediction: South Carolina 38, UAB 9]

  • Pre-game: “Conner Shaw appears set to be held out of action again, but that shouldn’t matter for the Gamecocks.”
  • Post-game: I’ll be this was a fun game to watch.

Western Kentucky 32, Kentucky 31 [Prediction: Kentucky 14, Western Kentucky 13]

  • Pre-game: “I will not be shocked if the Hilltoppers win this game, however, I absolutely cannot pick two Sun Belt Conference teams to upset SEC teams this weekend.”
  • Post-game: Kentucky football continues it’s slide into obscurity.

Auburn 31, Louisiana-Monroe 28 [Prediction: Louisiana – Monroe 20, Auburn 19]

  • Pre-game: “I can, however, pick one.  ULM looked too well coached and the prospect of knocking off two SEC West teams in a row should be enough to keep the Warhawks fired up.  This isn’t a bandwagon pick.  Auburn will have to make some serious strides in all phases of the game to win on Saturday.”
  • Post-game: A wins a win, right?

Missouri 24, Arizona State 20 [Prediction: Missouri 30, Arizona State 27]

  • Pre-game: “Todd Graham’s Sun Devils (2-0) are rolling so far this season.  Last week, they dismantled Illinois, and a supposedly tough Illini defense, 45-14.  The Tigers got shellacked by Georgia in the second half of last week’s SEC home opener.  Can the Tigers rebound in this tough out-of-conference home game?  I’m betting Gary Pinkel will have his gang ready.”
  • Post-game: The Tigers hang on to win a close one.

Texas 66, Ole Miss 31 [Prediction: Texas 34, Ole Miss 13]

Alabama 52, Arkansas 0 [Prediction: Alabama 31, Arkansas 17]

  • Pre-game: “For the record:  a) I do not think Tyler Wilson will play; b) the Razorbacks aren’t as bad as they looked against ULM.  The Hogs will play better, but the Tide should hang on for win number three.”
  • Post-game: Whoa, pigs, stunk.

Week 4 Picks

Alabama 27, Arkansas 17 – Alabama’s offense will be a little better against Arkansas’ defense than Arkansas’ offense is against Alabama’s defense.  Get that?

Auburn 52, Florida Atlantic 31 – The Owls make Gene Chizik’s Tigers feel a little better before a rough October begins.

LSU 31, West Virginia 14 – LSU finishes a tough September by using a familiar formula to beat the Mountaineers: pound the rock and play defense.

Mississippi State 42, Louisiana Tech 17 – Dan Mullen’s Bulldogs move back down in class and whip La Tech.

South Carolina 35, Vanderbilt 10 – Vandy returns to Earth and the Gamecocks get back on track.

Tennessee – UT uses their off week to prepare for Buffalo.

Week 3 Review

Only 6-3 for the week which adds up to 25-6 overall.

Alabama 41, North Texas 0 [Prediction: Alabama 56, North Texas 6]

  • Pre-game: “The only question in this game is how much Phillip Sims and Cyrus Kouandjio will play.”
  • Post-game: Anytime you pitch a shutout, it’s a great game.  Cyrus, Sims and a ton of other second and third teamers played plenty.

Arkansas 38, Troy 28 [Prediction: Arkansas 49, Troy 24]

  • Pre-game: “Arkansas should breeze through their final tune-up before Bama.”
  • Post-game: Not exactly a breeze for the Razorbacks, but for a Sun Belt team, Troy isn’t bad.

Clemson 38, Auburn 24 [Prediction: Auburn 44, Clemson 34]

  • Pre-game: “Clemson has underwhelmed in their season-opening wins over Troy and Wofford and has clearly made this game the focus of the early part of their schedule. This focus won’t be enough, though, as Auburn wins it’s 18th in a row.”
  • Post-game: Clemson roars back from a 21-7 deficit to rock Auburn.  For one game, I’m impressed with Dabo’s Tigers.  We’ll find out how good they really are over the next two weeks against Florida State and Virginia Tech.

LSU 19, Mississippi State 6 [Prediction: LSU 38, Mississippi State 24]

  • Pre-game: “The Tigers stuff the Bulldog’s rushing game and cruise easily.”
  • Post-game: My pre-game analysis was right on the money.  LSU’s defense made it look easy against the Bulldogs.

Vandy 30, Ole Miss 7 [Prediction: Ole Miss 27, Vandy 17]

  • Pre-game: “Houston Nutt and Ole Miss stop Vandy’s win streak at two.”
  • Post-game: Uh, no.  Vandy’s win streak reaches three and Nutt finds his seat getting warmer.  It’s obvious that I swung and missed on my overall prediction for Ole Miss this season.

Florida 33, Tennessee 23 [Prediction: Florida 31, Tennessee 30]

  • Pre-game: “Both teams’ seasons will turn on this game. The loser shuffles toward the bottom of the East, while the winner keeps the dream alive. This game will be a report card on Derek Dooley’s progress at UT.”
  • Post-game: Florida impressively throttled UT for most of the day.  The Gators allowed UT to make it close in the second half, despite the Justin Hunter being injured for the Vols.

Georgia 59, Coastal Carolina 0 [Prediction: Georgia 52, Coastal Carolina 14]

  • Pre-game: “An easy win the for the Bulldogs. It won’t make Mark Richt’s seat any cooler, but a win is a win.”
  • Post-game: An easy win the for the Bulldogs. It won’t make Mark Richt’s seat any cooler, but a win is a win.

Louisville 24, Kentucky 17 [Prediction: Kentucky 7, Louisville 6]

  • Pre-game: “The first two weeks of the season have been ugly for these two teams. This one won’t be pretty, either, but UK gets the win.”
  • Post-game: The Wildcats offense showed some signs of life, but not enough.  It’s going to be a long season in Lexington.

South Carolina 24, Navy 21 [Prediction: South Carolina 39, Navy 10]

  • Pre-game: “The Gamecocks could be hungover from last week’s battle against Georgia, but this one shouldn’t be close.”
  • Post-game:  The Gamecocks were hungover, but scored late and had a big defensive stop to beat the Midshipmen.
